Gardens Through The Decades

Mon.23.May.2016 UTC

Watch our video to see award-winning garden designer and TV presenter, Chris Beardshaw, take a walk down memory lane – and the garden path – to see how the fads and fashions of the last 60 years have influenced great British garden design.

This video charts the post-war wave of horticulture during the 1950s, explosion of colour and variety during the indulgent 60s and 70s, appetite for experimentation in the 80s, makeover and decking craze of the 90s – and brings us right up to date in the 21st Century.

Spot iconic gardens features synonymous with the times – from utilitarian concrete fencing, crazy paving and island beds to decking, water features and artificial turf.Find out why today’s gardens are all about taking the inside outside and creating a haven where wildlife can thrive – and discover, when it comes to a thoroughly modern garden, why it’s sadly goodbye to our cheery little friend, the garden gnome.

The video follows research by paving manufacturer, Bradstone, to coincide with its 60th anniversary, revealing 70 per cent of British gardens are stuck in the past, with almost two thirds (65%) of homeowners admitting their outdoor space features influences from previous decades.
